You’ve probably heard of vitamin B-17 by its other name: Laetrile. Laetrile has been the focus of extreme controversy for several decades. Many alternative doctors hail it as a possible cure for cancer, while other evidence discredits such claims. There have been many anecdotal and documented cases of laetrile helping to reverse cancer, and it is often included in alternative cancer treatment plans. When it was banned as a cancer treatment in the U.S., as a result, clinics opened in Mexico offering laetrile treatment for cancer.

B-17’s is found naturally as amygdalin in apple seeds and apricot seeds. But amygdalin, or laetrile, has a very dangerous side effect: it can be converted into cyanide in the body. There have been cases of people using laetrile or high doses of B-17 who end up with cyanide poisoning. That’s why you should never consume large doses of B-17, nor apple or apricot seeds to treat health conditions or as a cancer preventative, without close supervision by somebody who understands B-17s positive and negative effects. The toxic effects of Laetrile can be exacerbated by interactions with Vitamin C and certain foods, such as almond seeds, celery, peaches and bean sprouts.

This is one nutrient to discuss with your physician before incorporating a separate item in your supplement plan.

Diarrhea is Your Friendly Warning!

Have you ever considered diarrhea a good thing? Well it is! It’s one of the body’s many defense systems for getting rid of toxins. If you eat a poison or something that your body knows will ultimately harm your health, your body will do whatever it can to eliminate it (think vomiting, sneezing, eyes tearing up, and yes, diarrhea!) Isn’t that wonderful?

Diarrhea is your friendly warning that you’ve ingested something bad. That means if you have chronic or recurring diarrhea, you shouldn’t just put up with it, or suppress it by taking Imodium. It’s time to see a health professional to track down the cause.

One main cause of diarrhea is food poisoning from certain bacteria in your food like e-coli or salmonella. Foreign bacteria in water that your body doesn’t recognize can also trigger diarrhea – like when you’re traveling to another country. And of course, if a virus like the flu gets into your digestive tract, your body will try to get rid of it fast!

But other toxins that can trigger a diarrhea response are foods that you are sensitive or allergic to. You can also have a food intolerance that directly affects your intestinal tract such as lactose intolerance, or soy intolerance. The foods in question aren’t “poisons” per se, but your body has been trained that these foods will cause unpleasant reactions either in your gut or once they hit your bloodstream. That’s why your body can decide to move that food through and out of your digestive tract faster, so that the food doesn’t continue to irritate the gut lining, or have the chance to be fully digested and enter the bloodstream.

Now sometimes diarrhea is an indicator of a more serious health condition. For example, if you have celiac disease, a severe autoimmune reaction to ingesting gluten, ignoring your diarrhea could be a serious mistake that could really hurt your health or even prove fatal. Other chronic conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease can sometimes be improved by removing irritating foods, but may also require additional medical attention.

Egg Salad

Ingredients:

  • 6 hard boiled eggs
  • 1/4 cup white onion chopped
  • 1 Stalk celery finely diced
  • 2 green onions chopped
  • ​1/4 cup Paleo mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ​pepper to taste
  • 1/4 tsp celery salt
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • Preparation:

  • Crack and peel the shells off the eggs.
  • Separate the yolks from the egg whites and dice the whites.
  • Stir together the egg yolks, mayonnaise, mustard, salt, onion powder, celery salt, and pepper.
  • Place them in a separate bowl along with the white onion, celery, and green onions and stir to combine.
  • Stir in the mayonnaise mixture. Serve garnished with additional green onions if desired.
