A Personal Note from Dr. Ray . . .

So many patients tell us how thankful they are for gaining back their health and for the great people here at our Center. Now you can let others know too! We'd LOVE it if you would leave a review on Facebook and/or Google for us! Thank YOU to our tribe! - Dr. Ray

This Month's Vita-Mini:
Vitamin N = "Nature!"

We don’t think of nature as a nutrient, but the amount of time we spend outdoors, gardening, at the beach, or in a forest, can make a huge impact on our health.

Here are just some of the ways that nature nourishes us:

  • Natural sunlight not only helps raise our vitamin D levels, it can help regulate circadian rhythms of sleep and wake cycles, helping us sleep better.
  • Fresh air is shown to be healthier than indoor air every time! Unless it’s an allergy season for you, or you live near a source of air pollution like a major highway, open those windows and let the breeze in!
  • Bodies of water, especially flowing water, fountains or waterfalls or a walk outside after a rainstorm, are all great sources of negative ions, which create a better mood and replenishing our natural magnetic field balance (as opposed to the positive ions from electronics, fluorescent lights and cellular gadgets, which can harm our personal magnetic field and bring us down).
  • Forest bathing, (walking or sitting in the woods), is not only relaxing, it provides natural aromatherapy from the trees and plants. Research shows that forest bathing can reduce your pulse rate as well as reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, fatigue and confusion.

This is a great time to get outside! The weather is cooler, the trees are just starting to show a little color. What are you waiting for?

Hashimoto’s Disease: Is it the Real
Reason Your Thyroid is Slow?

Maybe you were told, or maybe you suspect, that your thyroid is sluggish or slow. You may even be taking thyroid meds from your doctor. Maybe they work, and maybe they don’t. Maybe your thyroid meds used to work but they don’t now. Or maybe your thyroid lab tests came back normal, and although you still had all the symptoms of thyroid disorder, your doctor told you it was all in your head and you didn’t get any medication.

Thyroid problems are tricky, whether it’s an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or an over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Here’s why they’re tricky: A large percentage of thyroid issues are caused by an underlying autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s disease.

Hashimoto’s, like all autoimmune conditions, is where the body’s immune system is attacking and destroying part of your body – in this case, your thyroid.

If your doctor hasn’t taken the time to check for Hashimoto’s and rule it out, no matter what you do, no matter what thyroid medications you take, your thyroid is still being attacked by your immune system. Medications can mask the symptoms and give you the thyroid hormones you desperately need, but until you shut off the autoimmune reaction caused by Hashimoto’s, your thyroid will continue to lose function and ultimately could be completely destroyed.

What can cause Hashimoto’s? Lots of things! Hashimoto’s disease can be triggered by undiagnosed food allergies, a leaky gut (yes, once again, your gut health and intestinal bacteria), overuse of antibiotics, environmental toxins, nutrient deficits, previous illness, genetic predisposition, and more.  The good news is that with diligent detective work to find and eliminate the triggers, the autoimmune damage in Hashimoto’s can be healed and the attack on your thyroid reduced or stopped altogether.

But to do this, you’ll need to work closely with someone who can help you determine (a)Whether you have Hashimoto’s or not (b) How much the damage to your thyroid has progressed (c) What your unique Hashimoto triggers are and how to stop them. The rewards? You can start to feel normal again, restore your health, enjoy energy and vitality, lose weight more easily, and stop getting Hashimoto’s symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, depression, acid reflux, dry skin, allergies, etc.

Next month, we’ll talk more about the symptoms of Hashimoto’s disease and steps I take to help patients stop the vicious and destructive course Hashimoto’s takes to destroy your thyroid. In the meantime, there is a great book available, titled: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating The Root Cause, by Dr. Isabella Wentz. It’s an important resource for everyone struggling with thyroid disorder, and is a good companion for finding your particular Hashimoto’s triggers.
