Vitamin K is critical to proper blood clotting. This is why the symptoms of vitamin K deficiency are easy bruising, heavy menstrual bleeding, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Vitamin K’s effect of improving blood clotting also means that if you are taking anticoagulant medication, you should not take a vitamin K supplement.

Vitamin K injections are often recommended for newborns to prevent rare internal bleeding complications in babies. However, many mothers opt instead to eat extra leafy greens in the weeks before delivery to be sure that their baby has plenty of natural vitamin K.

Another important function of vitamin K is transporting calcium in the body. This means vitamin K is crucial to good bone health including preventing fractures and reducing bone loss.

The best source of vitamin K is leafy green vegetables. You can also find it in fish, liver and eggs. Vitamin K is not only found in food, it can be produced in your body if you have healthy gut bacteria.

Probiotics and your Mood

In the last several newsletters, we’ve been learning about healthy gut bacteria and how important it is to good health. Now it makes perfect sense how healthy gut bacteria influence our digestion, promoting regular and healthy bowel movements, helping digest nutrients and keep our gut lining strong. After all, those are all happening right where the bacteria live: in our intestinal tract.

What you might not know is that the benefits of healthy gut bacteria go way beyond just the gut itself. How far? The bacteria in our digestive tract can affect our mood, emotions and mental health! So much so that the bacteria in our gut is almost considered a second brain. This is primarily due to the interconnection of our brain and enteric nervous system via the vagus nerve. Because of this connection, if our gut bacteria is out of whack, we can be vulnerable to emotional discomfort that can include increased anxiety and depression.

Psychiatrists and psychologists are now starting to explore probiotics as an alternative to pharmaceutical treatment in many mood disorders and are backing it with research. In clinical trials with mice, the healthy bacteria strains of Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus Rhamnosus have shown to reduce anxiety-like behavior.

Good bacteria also prevent leaky gut syndrome, which in turn can protect your brain. If you have a leaky gut (meaning a damaged intestinal lining that allows toxins, allergens and undigested proteins leak into your bloodstream) all that junk that leaks out of your gut can travel to your brain and sometimes even pass through the blood-brain barrier. This can cause inflammation of brain tissue, which is now considered a primary cause of depression.

Did you know that 95% of the body’s serotonin can be found in the gut? Serotonin is the “happiness” neurotransmitter. If your gut bacteria aren’t in good shape, you may be missing out on getting enough serotonin in your system. Who wants to miss out on their fair share of happiness!

There really is nothing to lose in working to improve your gut bacteria through diet and a quality probiotic supplement. Not only will your health improve, it may improve your whole outlook and quality of life in ways you never expected!
